Division of Materials Science and Engineering, which is under the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, studies ceramic, metallic, polymer and composite materials in a multidisciplinary perspective. Our division has strong relations with physics, chemistry and biology as well as chemical engineering and mechanical engineering. Division of Materials Science and Engineering especially dwells on the relations between microstructure-feature-performance and parameters that affect the behavior of materials during utilization. This division concentrates on the forming and joining of materials, improvement of surface characteristics and improvement of material properties by post-production processes like heat treatment. Furthermore material properties restricts the process design and therefore materials play an important role on all engineering applications. The developments on the materials provides new design criteria and new products. Even though metals and their alloys are utilized widely among engineering materials, there are also constant development and enhancement of ceramic, polymer and composite materials.

The main goal of this program is to provide knowledge and skill of required scientific base, information technologies and computer utilization, purposive information usage, modelling, entrepreneurship, new product and process design to satisfy the scientific and industrial requirements. 

The developments of materials allows new design criteria and new products. The continuance of these developments will also increase the possibility of employment of materials engineers.
